For Breakfast – ‘Undercurrent’ – Get caught up in the London sextet’s sprawling post-rock debut.

The north London six-piece share their debut single via Glasshouse Records.

It’s no secret that humankind has an obsession with the ocean, it seems to give us a sense of peace,  clarity of mind and Victorian-era doctors even prescribed ‘sea air’ as a cure for the unwell. Undercurrent, the new single by For Breakfast, conjures up images of a floating calm, a path to self-discovery and sonic healing.

A bassline runs through the track as constant as a soft crashing wave, the distant echo of a flute cuts the silent tension as Undercurrent sweeps over you and into motion. Despite the tracks warm atmosphere, a growing tension builds as the full power of having six musicians on a track comes into play.

Maya Harrison’s vocal bends between comfort and anxiety as she’s swallowed by the sinking feeling the thoughtful and spacious atmosphere creates. Kaleidoscopic guitars cut an eerie path through dark and light before exploding into an emotionally draining wall of angular noise.

The feeling of the track reminds me of Brighton’s post-rock/ dark wave specialists Esben and the Witch, an unsettling vocal cry in amongst a sea of sprawling noise, beautiful yet foreboding.
